Living With Pocket Gophers
By A Mystery Man Writer
Description
Gopher, pocket gopher, or pouched rat are all names for the Northern Pocket Gopher. The Northern Pocket Gopher seldom appears aboveground; when it does, it rarely ventures more than 2 1/2 feet (750 mm) from a burrow entrance. However, the name gopher is often wrongly used for various ground squirrels and prairie dogs, which do regularly appear above ground. These other small mammals must not be confused for gophers, as several of these species are or may be protected.
