Description
This was an assembly to greet us at a junior high school in the south of Honshu. There were 23 rows of 20 students waiting in precise rows. The Japanese have a 6-3-3 school system. Their elementary school goes from 1st grade through 6th. Their junior high goes from 7-9 (or as they refer to it, 1-3 junior high). High school goes from 10-12 (or 1-3 senior high). Compulsory education ends at the end of 9th grade.
